The Energy of Money Podcast

Make Friends with Your Negativity Bias.

Episode Summary

In this episode of The Energy of Money Podcast, Dr. Maria explores negativity bias. You finally decide to write the book, start the business, or have the conversation you have been putting off. Almost immediately your brain floods you with reasons it will not work. Dr. Maria explains why that voice shows up and what to do about it. Dr. Maria shares two stories. Sally, a bookkeeper with two clients and eight years of experience, freezes at networking events because she is afraid of being seen. Alice, a photographer with a winning shot, spent so long agonizing over matting choices that she missed the contest deadline entirely. The winner's photo, she later realized, was no better than hers. The only difference was that the winner entered. The negativity bias is not a flaw. It is your brain doing what a hundred thousand years of evolution trained it to do, scanning for danger before it scans for opportunity. The problem is that today's risks are rarely life threatening, and your brain has not gotten the memo. Dr. Maria walks through a five step process for reclaiming your freedom to choose: observe the thought, discover what your brain is trying to protect you from, reassure it, redirect your attention toward what matters, and take one meaningful action. Confidence, she notes, usually follows the action rather than preceding it.
